Signal Hill Studios
Kansas City, MOSignal Hill Studio Apartments at 2950 Summit Street marks a significant milestone in providing modern and eco-friendly housing options for individuals in the area. The project is unique as it utilizes recycled shipping containers to create affordable and sustainable housing in the Midtown urban core.
Rosemann, in partnership with Syndicate Real Estate Development, played a crucial role in this project by providing professional architectural design and structural services. They also worked closely with city officials, council members, and neighboring communities to secure the necessary approvals and permits for this innovative construction approach, which is the first of its kind in Kansas City.
The decision to use reclaimed shipping containers is not only environmentally conscious but also preserves materials that might otherwise end up in the ocean. The containers’ simplicity, size, and durability make them an excellent choice as a base for modular multifamily units.
Aesthetically, the exterior utilizes accent colors to establish a rhythm on the site. Units are designed with a “tiny living” concept in mind, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, custom cabinetry, space-saving appliances, in-unit laundry, full bathrooms, storage, and central air and heating. The first-floor studio apartments come with patios, while upper floors feature decks.
To address the site’s steep slope, an impressive limestone retaining wall was formed by utilizing reclaimed, excavated rock from the site. It serves not only as a functional element but also provides a beautiful view from the west side of the site.
In addition to the housing units, the site includes a dog park-open space, complete with a partially enclosed gathering area constructed from a recycled shipping container. This innovative approach to housing not only promotes sustainability but also offers a comfortable and modern living environment for the community.
